March 3 was a cool rainy day but that did not dampen the spirits of the delegates of newly formed Classis Michigan. Twenty-two delegates from eleven churches met for their first meeting at the Grace United Reformed Church in Alto, Michigan.

Rev. Peter Adams, pastor of Grace URC served as the chairman; Rev. Brian Vos of Trinity URC in Byron Center was the Vice-President; Rev. W. H. Oord of Faith URC in Holland was elected as Clerk during the meeting. Mr. Clarence Kamstra, who faithfully served as the Classical Treasurer of Classis Mid-West, was elected as the Treasurer of Classis Michigan. Mr. Henry Rubingh was elected as Assistant Treasurer for the Classis.

One of the most delightful activities that took place during this meeting was the Examination for Candidacy in the URCNA of Mid-America Reformed Seminary graduate, Mr. Alrick Headley. The prospective candidate answered questions in the areas of practica, Bible knowledge, Biblical exegesis, confessional knowledge, Reformed doctrine, church history, and ethics. Mr. Headley gave testimony of his love for the Lord, his knowledge of the reformed faith, and his desire to serve the Lord in the ministry of His Word. After seeking guidance from the Lord, the Classis voted to declare Mr. Headley as Candidate for the Ministry in the URCNA. Mr. and Mrs. Headley were informed of the decision of Classis and Rev. Joel Vander Kooi, pastor of the church where Mr. and Mrs. Headley are members, offered a prayer of thanksgiving to the Lord for providing His church with men who are filled with love for the Lord and a desire to serve Him.

During the lunch break, Dr. Dirk Bergsma informed the classis about various events taking place within the federation on the west coast. We are thankful to God for the way He continually provides for His church and His people. Dr. Bergsma was asked to convey greetings to the newly formed Classis West when they convene later this month.

Classis also adopted Rules of Procedure for Classis Michigan which will be made available to the churches in an attractive booklet. These rules of procedure will serve the classis at future meetings.

Classical Treasurer, Mr. C. Kamstra, reported on the finances of Classis Mid-West. It was moved and adopted to give donations received from churches of Classis Mid-West who are not in Classis Michigan to the newly formed classes where those churches are members.

An Overture to begin an information newsletter was also approved by Classis. The purpose of this newsletter is to accumulate information from the churches within classis and then to provide the churches with that information. Rev. Steve De Boer of the Eastmanville URC offered to serve as editor. Both he and the clerk were charged with the task of coming up with guidelines for the newsletter.

The next meeting of Classis Michigan is scheduled for Tuesday, October 6, 1998 at the new building of Trinity URC on Kalamazoo Avenue. The Vice-President of Classis thanked the Grace URC for hosting classis in their beautiful new facility. Rev. B. Vos closed the meeting in prayer.

We thank the delegates of Classis for the work they were able to accomplish at this meeting. We give thanks to God for the privilege of being able to serve Him in His church.

Respectfully submitted,
The Clerk of Classis
