A Summary of Classis Michigan
A beautiful autumn morning set the stage for a delightful Classis Meeting for delegates to the fifth meeting of Classis Michigan. The meeting was held at the new facility of the Bethany United Reformed Church, formerly known as the Beverly URC. Rev. A. Besteman served as Chairman and Rev. J. Vander Kooi as Vice-Chairman.
After reading from Galatians 5 and hearing the roll call, delegates joyfully approved a recommendation to receive the Covenant Independent Reformed Church of Byron Center into our fellowship. After welcoming the new church into Classis Michigan, the Chairman also welcomed two new ministers to the classis: Rev. Tim Perkins of Cornerstone, and Rev. Mark Zylstra of Allendale. Other guests and visitors were also welcomed, including Rev. Casey Freswick, Bethany's new pastor.
Once items of business were taken care of, the Classis got down to the main business of the day: the colloquium doctum of Rev. Steve McGee, pastor of the Covenant Independent Reformed Church. After examining Rev. McGee in the areas of Practica, Church Polity, Confessional Knowledge, Reformed Doctrine, and Ethics, the Classis voted to receive Rev. McGee into the fellowship of the United Reformed Churches as Minister of the Word and Sacraments.
The meeting finished, the delegates enjoyed visiting with one another over a delicious meal, each delegate giving thanks for Bethany's new facility and our federation's new congregation.
