The Consistory of the Faith United Reformed Church of Olive Center, Michigan overtures Classis Michigan to declare a Colloquium Doctum as unnecessary for retired and emeritus Ministers.
Background
“A minister who has been ordained in a church outside the federation shall not be admitted to serve in a church within the federation without an examination conducted to the satisfaction of the classis, according to the regulations adopted by the federation, whereupon he may be declared by classis eligible for call by his sponsoring Consistory.”
2. Appendix 4: “Guidelines for a Colloquium Doctum”
Point 2-C: “Upon sustaining the colloquium doctum, the classis shall declare the minister eligible to be called by the sponsoring Consistory as a Minister of the Word and Sacraments among the United Reformed Churches in North America.”
Grounds
1. Both Church Order 8 and the Guidelines for a colloquium doctum refer to ministers who desire to actively serve within the federation.
2. A retired minister is not being “admitted to serve in a church within the federation.”
3. A retired Minister is not seeking “to be called by the sponsoring Consistory as a Minister of the Word and Sacraments.”
4. Classis has no intention of declaring a retired or emeritus minister as “eligible for call.”
5. The sponsoring Consistory does not intend to declare the retired or emeritus minister as “eligible to be called.”
6. The sponsoring Consistory does not intend to call the retire or emeritus minister as their Minister of the Word and Sacraments.
7. The Classical Interim Committee has stated that such an exam is unnecessary.
The Consistory of the Faith United Reformed Church overtures Classis Michigan to overture Synod to declare the colloquium doctum as unnecessary for retired and emeritus ministers who desire to join our federation using the same grounds listed above with the exception of ground seven.
