Classis Michigan
April 11. 2000
It was a very exciting day for delegates as they came to what would be one of the longest classis meetings in the history of Classis Michigan. What made it exciting was that delegates were able to welcome a new pastor and a new church into our federation.
After some basic business, the classis proceeded to examine Rev. Paul Murphy, pastor of the Dutton Independent Reformed Church for the past nine years. Rev. Murphy presented himself well as a defender of the reformed faith and promoter of the glorious truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He ways unanimously welcomed by the delegates of classis as a pastor of the URCNA.
While historically the Dutton IRC may be one of the oldest congregations represented at Classis Michigan, she became the newest congregation welcomed into our federation. It was a delight for all present to be able to welcome this church, which for years has been a proponent of the historic reformed faith.
Moving on to other matters, the classis voted down an overture requesting that emeritus pastors not submit to a colloquium doctum. Delegates felt that a colloquium doctum was a proper avenue for maintaining the dignity of both the office of minister and the federation.
Six churches brought requests for advice, and several churches sought recommendations for discipline concerns.
A letter summarizing the thirty year history of the Zion URC, now disbanded, was summarized. It was noted that the church had sought to faithfully served the Lord for thirty years and that in all those years the Lord had been faithful to them.
The next meeting was scheduled June 13. At that meeting two seminary graduates will be examined for candidacy.
We thank the Lord for the privilege of being able to serve Him. May He continue to bless His Church and expand His Kingdom through the United Reformed Churches in North America.
