Introductory Essay to John Owen's The Death of Death in the Death of Christ

by J. I. Packer, M.A., D. Phil.

FORWARD

Almost a decade ago God, in His marvelous grace, led me and my family into an evangelical church where the Bible was preached. In His providence He was pleased to show us in the Scriptures the blessed truths of sovereign grace. After a time we became alarmed by the doctrinal confusion in many evangelical circles. As I read Puritan works I came upon John Owen’s THE DEATH OF DEATH IN THE DEATH OF CHRIST with introductory essay by Dr. J. I. Packer.

The introductory essay by Dr. Packer is a concise statement of the biblical gospel – what Packer terms the "old gospel". The essay’s clarity in exposing the doctrinal confusion that is so prevalent in today’s gospel led me to photocopy it to give to my patients and friends. Many who love the doctrines of sovereign grace have found the introduction a substantial help and a tremendous blessing. It is my prayer that it may continue to be so – to the good of the Lord’s people and for His glory.

Unfortunately the book THE DEATH OF DEATH IN THE DEATH OF CHRIST with Dr. Packer’s introductory essay is presently out of print. However, John Owen’s treatise, which thoroughly answers the objections to the doctrine of particular redemption, continues in print as part of Volume 10 in THE WORKS OF JOHN OWEN published by the Banner of Truth Trust. These works are highly recommended to the serious student of the Scriptures.
