Candidates for the Ministry

Within the URCNA, candidates for the ministry are men who have earned Master of Divinity degrees (or its academic equivalent) and who have passed an examination of their commitment to the Bible and the Reformed confessions, and also of their theological and ministerial competence and ability. Examinations are conducted by the council of a URCNA congregation, in the presence of and with the advice and concurrence of members of the classis (regional assembly) of which that congregation is a part. Once a man has been declared a candidate for the ministry, he is eligible to receive a call to serve as a pastor of a church.

Licensed Exhorters

Within the URCNA, licensed exhorters (or licentiates) are generally men who are enrolled in a program of study leading to a Master of Divinity, or equivalent, degree with the intention of eventually serving in the ministry. Licensed exhorters are permitted to conduct worship services and to exhort (or proclaim) God's word as part of worship. They are not, however, permitted to baptize nor are they permitted to administer the Lord's Supper. A license to exhort allows the student to gain practical experience in the work of the ministry. A license to exhort is valid for one year and may be renewed.
