Press Release

United Reformed Churches in North America

Tuesday, 10 July 2007

PALOS HEIGHTS, IL – God’s goodness in bestowing unity upon His people was the theme which greeted delegates to the Sixth Synod of the United Reformed Churches in North America as they gathered on Monday, July 9.

Convened by Community URC of Schererville, Ind., Synod 2007 began meeting on Monday at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Ill., with a worship service. The service was led by Community URC Elder Martin Nuiver and Rev. Paul Ipema, who brought the delegates a sermon on Psalm 133 entitled, “How Good; How Pleasant!”

Deliberations began in earnest on Tuesday morning with the presentation of credentials, the roll call, and the reception of five congregations which had been provisionally received via Art. 32 of the Church Order.

After the opening matters, delegates elected officers for the assembly. Those elected were: Rev. Ronald Scheuers of the First URC in Chino, Calif., as Chairman; Rev. Ralph Pontier of Redeemer URC in Orange City, Iowa, as Vice-Chairman; Elder Edwin Kreykes of Cornerstone URC in Sanborn, Iowa, as First Clerk; and Rev. Doug Barnes of Hills URC in Hills, Minn., as Second Clerk.

Having served as chairman of Synod Calgary 2004, Rev. Scheuers called on the body to exercise patience, unity, wisdom and diligence. He noted that the lengthy agenda presents the body with much to accomplish by the close of business on Friday. Nonetheless, Rev. Scheuers encouraged the men to strive for unity based on the truth of God’s Word.

Much of the late morning and afternoon on Tuesday was used to just that end, as delegates met in advisory committees to prepare recommendations on the various matters Synod must consider.

However, even on the first full day of Synod, the delegates were able to put a few matters to rest, meeting after supper to address early advice given by committees.

Additional information concerning the deliberations and decisions of Synod Schererville 2007 will be made available each day, the Lord willing.
